Optel Telecommunications was started on December 23, 1988. It is promoted by the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC), a government of Madhya Pradesh undertaking.

MPSEDC holds about 60% of shares in the company. The rest is with the public, financial institutions and the company’s collaborator, Furukawa Electric Company, Japan.

Optel Telecom manufactures products that conform to international standards and to the specifications as required by Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Indian Railways and Defence. Its products are widely used in the telecom sector, power sector, oil and gas sector, defence, Indian Railways and by private telecom operators. The registered office of the company is located at E- 1, New Industrial Area No 2, Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh 462046.

It is presently engaged in manufacturing of optical fibre, optical fibre cables, polyethylene insulated jelly filled cables, accessories and networking equipment.
